If you’re into videography, then you’ve probably heard of something called colour profiles and their effects on the quality of videos. A lot of people still don’t know what they are or how they work, but it’s actually really simple.

This article will briefly explain what colour profiles are and which one you should be using for your DJI drone footage.

What Is D-Cinelike?

D-Cinelike is a colour profile created by DJI and implemented in their latest firmware. It’s designed to produce better colours at lower ISOs but do so with a slight reduction in dynamic range.

This feature is only available for photos taken from D-series cameras (such as the X5S and Phantom 4 Pro) that support D-Cinelike.

For example, it won’t work when you shoot video or take photos with a drone that has an older camera.

What Is D-Log?

D-Log is a high-contrast colour profile that delivers cinematic images. D-Log color profile reduces contrast and saturation to give an image a natural movie look.

Although D-Log can be used in any lighting situation, it excels at reducing brightness and emphasizing detail in shadows—the perfect colour profile for low-light situations where detail is key.

This video was shot in D-Log and then had a LUT profile applied.

D-Cinelike Vs. D-Log

D-Cinelike and D-Log are both professional colour profiles you can use when filming. D-Cinelike is considered a more traditional colour palette while D-Log is often used by videographers who want to produce a filmic look.

D-Cinelike Vs. Normal

Depending on your model of drone camera, you may be given a choice between two colour profiles. These are either called D-Cinelike or Normal and they’re subtly different.

The former is designed to replicate film stock and give rich, vibrant colours. It’s recommended for shooting footage with which you intend to manipulate colour in post-production.

Is Normal Mode Better?

In a nutshell, D-Cinelike and D-Log mode both compress colour information. Normal mode only affects lightness.

That means your image will look more realistic as colours won’t be as saturated. For instance, when you look at a grass field in normal mode you can see every shade of green in it.

Drones That Support D-Cinelike

D-Cinelike is a feature that’s been introduced into almost all DJI drones since late 2014.

With D-Cinelike, you can get more dynamic range from your drone’s sensor, meaning better footage and less post-production work to achieve balanced shots.

Here are some of the DJI Drones that support D-Cinelike colour profile:

  • DJI Phantom 4 Series.
  • DJI Mavic Air.
  • DJI Mavic Air 2.
  • DJI Mavic 2 Pro.

Drones That Support D-Log

DJI drones that support D-Log include the DJI Mavic Pro and DJI Phantom 4 Pro. If you shoot in either D-Log or D-Cinelike with those drones, your images will be richer and more colorful.

D-Log improves dynamic range by reducing exposure levels at highlights to maintain image details in bright areas and extend dynamic range up to 1400%.

D-Log also brings out shadow details for a greater sense of depth.

In regards to three-color profiles for drones, we mentioned that each has their own time and place. With DJI’s higher-end drones, you have access to all three shooting modes, which means that no matter what your needs are, you can access it easily.

If you are a novice video taker and don’t want to spend time editing it afterwards, use Normal mode.

Normal mode is a good choice for aerial videographers who want good-looking footage without the need for any editing.

Shoot in either the Cinelike or D-log mode for pro-looking video footage, and make use of cutting and filters for further customization.

The process may be slower, but the end result is unbeatable quality video footage.
