Drone photogrammetry refers to taking photos with a drone camera, then using these photos to generate 3D maps, models, and other information. This technology can be used in fields like land surveying, insurance claims and 3D modelling, just to name a few! Here are all the basics you need to know about drone photogrammetry and how it could benefit your business or industry.

WHAT IS DRONE PHOTOGRAMMETRY?

Drone photogrammetry is a growing technology that uses unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), more commonly known as drones, to create detailed digital models of physical features such as topography or infrastructure. The resulting models can be used for a variety of applications and functions, including scientific research, GIS mapping and digital scanning.

HOW DOES DRONE PHOTOGRAMMETRY WORK?

Also known as DTM (Digital Terrain Model), photogrammetry has been around for hundreds of years. With drone photogrammetry, however, there’s no need for human guidance because drones are controlled by computers. As a result, they can capture images using pinpoint accuracy while flying at several hundred feet above ground level.

In photogrammetry, a drone captures a large number of high-resolution photos over an area. These images overlap such that the same point on the ground is visible in multiple photos and from different vantage points.

THE BENEFITS OF USING DRONE PHOTOGRAMMETRY

The primary benefit of drone photogrammetry is that it allows for creation of extremely high resolution models which can be used for a variety of applications. Models created from drone imagery capture more detail than ground based survey or aerial photography, making them great candidates for both plan generation and building information modelling (BIM). This also makes photogrammetric imagery a valuable tool in architecture, engineering, geology and urban planning.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT FOR YOUR PROJECT

The first thing you need to do is decide which drone you want to use for your photogrammetry project. Depending on how many images you will be taking, how much detail and accuracy is required, and your budget, there are several different drones consumer and commercial drones that can be used.

For smaller projects using a drone like the DJI Air 2s will easily be enough to help you get started. However for bigger projects you may wish to choose something like the DJI Mavic 3.

WHICH DRONE PHOTOGRAMMETRY SOFTWARE SHOULD YOU USE?

There are several drone photogrammetry software solutions available. The two most popular are Agisoft Metashape and Pix4Dmapper. If you don’t have enough experience with using specialized software, try Pix4Dmapper due to its easier interface and friendlier design. For more advanced use, you should consider Metashape. Alternatively, if you’re looking for an easier way to create 3D maps from aerial imagery, try Autodesk 123D Catch.
